Chamisa Warns Corrupt Local Authority Officials Of Forthcoming Audit

Opposition MDC leader, advocate Nelson Chamisa has warned corrupt officials in Local Authorities of the forthcoming audit. He noted that there was serious corruption in sub-national governments which needed to be uprooted. Addressing party supporters in Masvingo, Chamisa said that officials in local authorities (who are mostly from MDC) have to show that they are an alternative to ZANU PF (which he accuses of corruption). Local authorities have been struggling to deliver on their duties and responsibilities citing inadequacy of resources ranging from qualified personnel, technical and financial resources.

Recent studies have also revealed that political interference mainly by the two main political parties, ZANU PF and the MDC work to stifle performance in councils.

Corruption has also been identified among the most crippling factors behind underperformance by local authorities. It is alleged that some councillors in most councils are involved in illegal land selling.

Some councils, Harare City Council, in particular, have been accused of abusing the ratepayers’ money. It is reported that the HCC abused a US$144 million loan facility from the Chinese Import and Export Bank that was meant to refurbish Water and Sewer treatment plants.

The city is currently facing a huge water deficit and the little volumes pumped are not reaching some consumers as the ageing pipes burst. Reports also suggest that raw sewer is being discharged into water sources, as the Crowborough sewer treatment plant is not functioning well, thereby putting people’s lives at risk.
