Scientists Say They've Moved Closer To Finding HIV Cure For Humans

Researchers have said that they could be very close to finding the HIV cure for human beings after successfully removing HIV from the DNA of mice. More than 30 scientists from Temple University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center eliminated HIV in nine of 23 mice.

For the study, the researchers used an antiviral drug in combination with a tool called CRISPR that can edit genes.

One of the study’s senior investigators, Kamel Khalili said that clinical trials for the gene-editing component of the cure could start as early as next year if the Food and Drug Administration approves them.

Speaking to The Washington Post, Khalili said that gene editing could finally help scientists combat the virus.

According to the latest data from the World Health Organization, about 37 million people worldwide live with HIV whilst nearly 1 million people died of HIV-related issues in 2017.

There were reports earlier this year suggesting that a second person had been cured of the virus 12 years after another one was said to have been cured. Scientists, however, cautioned that it was premature to declare victory since the treatment they had used had several side effects.
