ZDERA Shows Zimbabwe What Ought To Be Done - Chamisa

MDC leader Nelson Chamisa said that the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZDERA) is an indication of what Zimbabwe ought to do.

ZDERA is a law enacted by the United States government in 2001 and is a cocktail of restrictions imposed against the Robert Mugabe government.

The measures have been renewed over the years by successive US Presidents.

Addressing MDC officials at the launch of his party’s blueprint policy document launch, Return to Legitimacy, Openness And Democracy (RELOAD) on Thursday, at Harare Gardens, Chamisa said:

Even when you look at Zidera, it is actually supposed to give us an indication. Zidera is actually the aspirations of all Zimbabwe, what they want to see in a democracy, that is how we are must be to look at it.

We all know what has to be done, the international community knows what has to be done.

Look at the IRI-NDI (International Republican Institute/National Democratic Institute) election observer report, look at the Commonwealth report, the European Union Observer Mission report, Sadc Observer Mission report and African Union report, they are all clear in terms of the catalogue of issues of what has to be done.

Let us implement those and then go and say we have implemented our own issues let us do business but it all boils down to leadership.

Genuine business would want to come where there is confidence and trust because capital hates noise, they will never come here because of our cockpit noise.

Former President Robert Mugabe did not hide his disdain of Western countries. His successor, Emmerson Mnangagwa has tried to project himself as a reformer.

The MDC has refused to accept Mnangagwa’s legitimacy as he initially came into office in 2017 on the back of a military coup, and won a controversial electoral victory in 2018 that needed the validation of the Constitutional Court.
