A senior MDC official said that his party will overthrow President Emmerson Mnangagwa before his term expires in 2023.
MDC vice-chairperson, Job Sikhala told a rally in Bikita, Masvingo province on Saturday that the party will stage a mega-demonstration that will bring down the government. Said Sikhala:
We are a committed leadership that will give Zanu PF headaches and [Amos] Chibaya was not lying or joking about the war and fight we are going to take to the doorsteps of Emmerson Mnangagwa. We are going to overthrow him before 2023 that is not a joke.
Sikhala’s remarks did not go down well with the ruling ZANU PF party.
ZANU PF Deputy Youth League secretary, Lewis Matutu, accused the MDC of planning a coup. He said:
When a person says they want to overthrow a constitutionally elected President, they are committing an offence and they are threatening a coup, this will not be allowed in this country. We love our peace and it will be protected.
The MDC national executive is expected to meet this week where the party will launch its “Reload” document which details how the party intends to take the country forward.
