Chombo's Application For Temporary Release Of Passport Opposed

Former Finance minister, Ignatius Chombo, yesterday had his application for a temporary release of his passport denied. Chombo had argued that he wants to go to South Africa for a medical check-up but the State is adamant that he wants to evade trial.

Chombo, who says he suffers from cancer, recently disclosed that his health has deteriorated after missing scheduled medical reviews in South Africa. He was earlier this month forced to abandon his trip when his passport was seized at Robert Mugabe International Airport by security agents who returned it to the clerk of court.

The passport had been released on May 10 this year after prosecutor Tapiwa Kasema consented to its release. Kasema was later arrested, prompting NPA prosecutors to protest alleging victimisation. Chombo was now seeking for magistrate’s court to temporarily release his passport from June 27 to July 17.

The State represented by prosecutors, Clemence Chimbari, Tendai Shonhai, Lovett Masuku and Tafara Chirambira opposed the application before magistrate Estere Chivasa. They argued that there was no proof that the letters of invitation to South Africa were authentic. Resultantly, they alleged that Chombo wants to evade trial under the pretext of seeking medical attention since he knows his trial is ready.

The matter was postponed to tomorrow for a ruling.
