Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi yesterday revealed that investigations into the White City Stadium bombing were still ongoing. Sunday marked a year after President Emmerson Mnangagwa narrowly escaped that assassination attempt at a Zanu PF rally at White City Stadium.
The incident occurred on June 23 last year and claimed lives of two security aides while scores of Zanu PF supporters and top government officials were injured. Speaking to the Daily News, Nyathi said:
That case is under investigation and there is a team that is in Bulawayo working on the matter.
Mnangagwa claimed later that Grace Mugabe loyalists had carried out the attack. However there seems to be no progress despite the police offering a $100 000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects.
Two suspects, Douglas Musekiwa and John Zulu were arrested and briefly dragged to court but later turned out to be merely touts operating from Old Pumula Bus Terminus. No evidence was presented to implicate them and they were released.
The government later roped in seven Belarusian ballistics experts to assist the multi-agency security team investigating the grenade attack. Investigations revealed that the explosive used in the attack was a grenade made in the former Soviet Union.
Observers have strongly argued that the bomb blast was an inside job, fuelled by factional tensions. Political analyst, Dumisani Nkomo, said that the issue has not yet been resolved because it is either an inside job or the security sector was incompetent to solve the issue.
