Chamisa Heaps Praise On Ethiopian Prime Minister For Instant Political Reforms

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has praised the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed for carrying out extensive political reforms in his country. Chamisa tweeted just hours after Ahmed had prevented a coup in one of the regions in Ethiopia.

Ahmed foiled a coup in Ethiopia’s northern Amhara region which saw an army general and three others being killed.

We applaud the reforms thus far undertaken by PM Abiy as key to democratisation and sustainable development of Ethiopia.

The attempted coup and other criminal events mustn’t derail the reforms.  Ethiopia is a shining example of positive change in Africa.

Such progress must be defended.

Ahmed came to power last year after the resignation of Hailemariam Desalegn who was accused of running down the Ethiopian economy. Since his assumption of office, Ahmed has freed thousands of political prisoners, lifted the state of emergency powers, unblocked banned websites and ended a lengthy war with neighbouring Eritrea.

Meanwhile, there has been a standoff between the youthful leader and President Emmerson Mnangagwa ever since the country held the July 30, 2018 elections which he said were manipulated in favour of the Zanu PF leader.

He has been calling for a dialogue which is being mediated by an independent foreign mediator. On the other hand, Mnangagwa has been saying that he is open for discussions with anyone, but, the legitimacy issue was off the table since he won the elections in question.
