MDC Women’s Assembly to commemorate International Widows Day

The MDC Women’s Assembly will on Sunday commemorate International Widows Day through a gathering of women in Norton.

This is an opportunity to reflect on the painful circumstances of women who became widows after losing their husbands to Zanu PF brutality.

A report published by Human Rights Watch- “Violations of Property and Inheritance Rights of Widows in Zimbabwe” – clearly shows that the plight of widows especially around inheritance issues cannot be ignored.

The MDC will pay special attention to the need to address stigma and welfare issues for widows in our comprehensive alternative policy.

International Widows Day is an opportunity for action towards achieving full rights and recognition for widows.

An MDC government will work to close the huge gap that has been created by the current regime by ensuring that mechanisms are put in place to provide widows with information on access to a fair share of their inheritance, land and productive resources; pensions and social protection that are not based on marital status alone but on decent work and equal pay, education and training opportunities.

Our commitment to empowering widows to support themselves and their families also means addressing social stigmas that create exclusion, and discriminatory or harmful practices.
