Ethiopia Shuts Down Internet As Army Chief Is Killed In Attempted Coup

Ethiopia shutdown its internet services on Sunday following an attempted coup that resulted in the death of the country’s army chief.

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, announced the shooting on TV while clad in military fatigue. He said the government had managed to thwart an attempted coup in the regional Amhara state. The army chief, Seare Mekonnen, was reportedly shot by his bodyguard in what has been described by the government as a “coordinated attack.”

Ethiopia’s state media reported that the attempted coup had been led by one General Asamnew Tsige, Amhara state’s head of security.

The situation prompted the US Embassy to issue a statement on Sunday 23 June,

“The attacks on these men were also an attack on the institutions and nation they served. The United States remains steadfast in its support for Ethiopia, as it pursues political and economic reforms that represent the surest path to Ethiopia’s prosperity, political inclusiveness, and stability,”
