Chamisa To Get $720 000 From MDC Handouts

Nelson Chamisa, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) is expected to receive $720 000 from party coffers as the constitution of the party stipulates that the party leader pockets 20% of the party’s handouts. This comes as the MDC is set to receive $3 596 400 from $12 million allocated to political parties by Treasury under the Political Parties Finance Act.

The money is for political parties that would have attained more than 5% votes in an election. Meanwhile, the ruling Zanu-PF will get $8 403 600.

Reports suggest that the late, Morgan Tsvangirai also received it from 2015 until the time he succumbed to cancer in 2018. A party insider told 263Chat that the party agreed in 2015 to give Tsvangirai 20% of the money from the treasury for his upkeep. The source said:

The 20% clause was put for Tsvangirai because he was not feeling well and he was unemployed. When you now have a president who is employed and healthy, the logic goes.

MDC secretary general, Charlton Hwende refuted the claims saying that the constitution does not allow for money to go to an individual. Hwende also said that he was not aware of any money that was given to Tsvangirai.

Hwende’s remarks are contrary to revelation by another insider who said:

The 20% clause has not been removed. It’s still there but now it will be channelled towards the office of president Chamisa because it is a very critical office in our party. They are the bedrock of the party as they make sure the president is well taken care of.
