Following a drought in the 2018 – 2019 agricultural season, more than 5.7 million Zimbabweans are reportedly in need of food ai
The Local Government minister July Moyo told Senators this past week that even though this is is the known number between government and NGOs there’s a need for reassessment as it likely needs to be revised upwards.
Said Moyo:
There is the general drought that is affecting the whole country and I am sure that Senators here are aware that the president has made an appeal for drought mitigation which covers the whole country and the United Nations has made a fresh appeal, initially for 5,7 million people to be assisted but I think we will work with them to revise the figures and those figures I think will be revised upwards after the vulnerability assessment programme that is going on right now.”
Zimbabwe’s drought situation has been worsened by an economic crisis that has seen prices of basic commodities rise sharply.
