ZRP On The Verge Of Changing Its Name

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is expected to change its name as part of its rebranding thrust. The Chronicle reports that the Attorney-General’s Office is currently drafting a Bill to change ZRP name to the Zimbabwe Police Service.

The development would be in line with announcements which were made by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development in its First Quarter Treasury Bulletin Highlights. The ministry said:

In February 2019, the Police Act amendments became effective and finally being in line with the Constitution.

This will see the country’s Police Force  the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) being rebranded to the Zimbabwe Police Service (ZPS) as a professional police responsible to the needs of the society.

The Bill is being drafted by the Attorney-General.

The ZRP has since embarked on retraining of its officers so that they conduct their duties in a professional manner. This is premised at restoring the public trust in the uniformed forces that is currently scarce.

Lately, the name ZRP has become synonymous with corruption, brutality, looting, insincerity, and subjectivity. This was as a result of corruption by some officers, particularly in the traffic section who would demand bribes from motorists. The brutality was often seen during demonstrations and when chasing away illegal vendors.
