MDC In Succession Quandary

Opposition party MDC insiders say that the unresolved succession issue could precipitate chaos in the event that the president is incapacitated.

At the 2019 elective Congress held in Gweru last month, the MDC elected three equal vice presidents and the concern is on who is in line to take over if, for any reason, party president Nelson Chamisa fails to complete his term.

A party insider who spoke to Newsday said that this is a question that still needs to be addressed;

Currently, the party has three equal vice-presidents, all three were elected at the Congress and there is, therefore, not one of them more superior to the others.

This leaves the party in a crisis if the president becomes incapacitated or for whatever reason fails to complete his term of office.

The question that would need to be answered is: Of the three, who will act as president?

The party is set to hold a national council meeting on Wednesday to deal with all outstanding issues from the Congress. Said the source:

The national council will sit on Wednesday and will finalise all the outstanding matters of Congress. We will then avail the amended constitution of the party which will be comprehensive and will deal with those matters; it will be clear and concise.

A law lecturer, Valentine Matutu opined that it is imperative for the MDC to clarify the issue of succession with a clear statement in order to avoid a political crisis.
