Documentary On January Shutdown Showcased At The Rainbow Hotel

Zenzele Ndebele, a journalist has produced a documentary which spotlights the January fuel protests that rocked the country leaving a trail of destruction and subsequently a heavy crackdown by security agencies.

The documentary which is 45 minutes long dubbed “Zimbabwe shutdown the January protests” has been slated for Bulawayo Rainbow Hotel at 5pm. Bulawayo was declared the most affected by the protests which saw over 800 people being arrested and dragged to court.

The producer of the documentary described it as a revisit of what exactly transpired. He said:

In January, there were demonstrations that were serious in Bulawayo and Harare, people looting shops and there were riots. What followed after that massive looting was also a massive crackdown by the police and army.

The documentary is captivating and terrific, it summarises everything that happened since we followed events as they were happening.

We notified the police according to the law. We had a meeting with them and they didn’t have a problem. We don’t expect any disruption at the event because they gave us a go-ahead. But they actually promised that they will send their details to give us protection.

There were allegations that the army tortured and raped civilians during the shutdown and the documentary is expected to reveal what really transpired.
