Govt Scoffs At Reports That Rural Teachers Union President Was Tortured

The government has scoffed at reports that president of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), Obert Masaraure, was abducted and tortured by state security agents.

No sooner had images of the lacerated back of Masaraure surfaced on social media that the government-aligned strolls took over Twitter, mocking the trade unionist for his troubles.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northen Ireland ambassador to Zimbabwe, Melanie Robinson expressed concern over the abduction and torture of activists. Said Robinson:

Such extra-judicial actions are clearly inconsistent with Zimbabwe’s constitution and the government’s stated reform agenda.

However, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Information, Ndavaningi Nick Mangwana said the images are “fake news”. He said:

ARTUZ called for a 3-day strike starting on Monday, which the Union claimed was a success.

Teachers of late have been at loggerheads with the government over poor working conditions. They are now demanding salaries in US dollars.
