Govt Says ARTUZ President Injured Himself, Not The Police Or CIO

The government has denied that the injuries suffered by Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) president, Obert Masaraure were inflicted by the police or CIO.

Speaking to The Herald on Friday afternoon, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services permanent secretary Ndavaningi Nick Mangwana claimed that Masaraure injured himself. He said:

We have checked with the security services including the police and they do not know anything about that. There is not even a police report that was made.

We believe that this was stage managed to put Zimbabwe in a very bad light since Zimbabwe and the European Union (EU) have launched a formal political dialogue.

The police did not do it (abduct him). The intelligence did not do it. He inflicted the bruises on himself to give a bad picture of the Government after he had called for a strike that was not successful.

It does not mean it’s the State that inflicted the bruises on him. The State does not have a monopoly on bruises. They have nothing to do with the State.

Masaraure claimed that he was abducted from his waterfalls home on Wednesday night, Itai Dzamara-style, beaten and left for dead.

Images appeared on social media on Thursday showing the young trade unionist seriously wounded on his the back.
