Chipinge Residents Approve Of MOPO Bill - Report

According to a ZBC News report, the residents of Chipinge have given the thumbs up to the Maintenance of Peace and Order (MOPO) Bill.

On Wednesday, a parliamentary public hearing was held at Gaza Hall in Chipinge on the Bill, which if passed, will replace the infamous Robert Mugabe-era Public Order and Security Act (POSA).

POSA came into force in the year 2000 and has been a bone of contention between the government on one side and opposition political parties and civic organisations on the other, as the law stifled the freedom of association.

Under POSA, it is illegal to hold a gathering without notifying the police, and it is also an offence to move around without identification particulars.
