In a video dated 28 May 2019, A patron asks the panellists if it wasn’t an option for Zimbabwe to ride bicycles just like in China and in some instances in England. The video comes at a time where the government has failed to address the fuel situation in the country despite several attempts to address it.
This is not the first time that the government has tried the cycling route in the midst of a dire economic situation. In 2000 Simba Makoni, then Finance Minister reduced duty imports for bicycles according to IP News.
“Many families can no longer afford more than one meal a day, many workers can no longer pay transport fares and now walk or cycle to work,” said Makoni. Seemingly anticipating a continued fuel shortage, the government has reduced duty on bicycles from 40 percent to 20 percent with effect from November 17, 2000.
