'Tongogara Was Killed For Pushing For A United Patriotic Front'

The late liberation war commander, Dumiso Dabengwa reportedly said that the late ZANLA commander Josiah Magama Tongogara was killed because he was pushing for a United Patriotic Front bringing together ZANU and ZAPU ahead of the 1980 elections.

Tongogara died in a car crash in Mozambique, according to the official account, while travelling to Mozambique on the eve of Zimbabwe’s independence.

Award-winning journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono wrote:

Amazing revelations by Dumiso Dabengwa who thought that General Josiah Tongogara was killed because he wanted a United Patriotic Front, instead of ZANU and ZAPU fighting the 1980 watershed election as individual parties. The issue of the Patriotic Front was a contentious one!

That aspect of a united front was always known, but Dabengwa says that Tongogara had openly mentioned at Lancaster House that Robert Mugabe would have been a disaster for the Patriotic Front and indeed for the country if he was allowed to lead. That prediction came to pass!

Dumiso Dabengwa argues that Tongogara thought that Robert Mugabe was only good for administrative tasks and not leading the United movement or the country! Due to Mugabe’s colossal grip on the State and ZANUPF, that history has always been whispered for fear of repercussions!
