Zambia To Start Load Shedding On June 1
Zambia’s power utility, the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) revealed that it will start load shedding on June 1. In a statement issued on May 17, the company said:
In view of the power deficit, Zesco Ltd. intends to commence load management to restrict supply.
ZESCO didn’t provide details as to how severe the shortage is and said it will meet stakeholders this week to brief them on the deficit, according to the notice.
Zambia, like Zimbabwe, is experiencing power shortages owing to low water levels at the two countries’ most reliable source of hydropower, Lake Kariba.
The water level in the dam was reported to be only 32 per cent as of May 20, which is a far cry from the same period last year when it was 77% full and still rising.

Zimbabwe has already commenced debilitating power cuts with areas going for at least 8 hours without power.
Due to low water levels in the Lake, the Zambezi River Water Authority (ZRA) has rationed water consumption by the two companies to 358 MW for Zimbabwe and 392 MW for Zambia, resulting in the two countries’ introducing load shedding since May and causing distress in industries and among domestic users.
It is feared that if the water is not managed properly, power generation will be discontinued by October this year.
