Cyril Ramaphosa Elected President By SA Parliament Unopposed

South Africa’s majority party, the African National Congress (ANC) president Cyril Ramaphosa has been elected the country’s President by Parliament unopposed.

Ramaphosa was re-elected the nation’s president on Wednesday, two weeks after his party won the majority of votes in the country’s legislative elections.

The country’s Chief Justice, Mogoeng Mogoeng told the Parliament in Cape Town that Ramaphosa was “duly elected president of the Republic of South Africa”.

According to a Reuters Report, under South Africa’s 1996 constitution, electors vote for a party, and the party selects individuals who go to the National Assembly, which then chooses the head of state.

MPs from the African National Congress, which won 230 out of 400 seats on May 8, choose the head of state in the parliament’s first post-election sitting.

The ANC won 57.7% of the popular vote, its lowest tally since the attainment of majority rule in 1994.

Ramaphosa will be sworn in on Saturday and thereafter name the vice president and cabinet.

Outgoing vice president David Mabuza, the former premier of Mpumalanga, a coal-producing north-eastern province, was not sworn in as an MP on Wednesday.

Mabuza is facing corruption allegations and his party’s Integrity Commission suggested he had brought the party into disrepute.

Mabuza was influential in the election of Ramaphosa as party president, to shrug off former President Jacob Zuma’s ex-wife Nkosazana Dhlamini-Zuma’s challenge.

Ramaphosa will serve his full five-year term after replacing Zuma as president in 2018 who was forced to resign by his party on allegations of abetting State Capture by an influential family, the Guptas.
