Muzarabani north legislator Zhemu Soda has made a serious, urgent, heartfelt request for more food relief as starvation looms in the constituency. It is reported that about 16 800 households are in dire need of food aid. This number is exclusive of 9 400 already receiving grain.
Soda said that crops in the constituency failed due to severe drought. He also said that even drought-resistant crops and small grain plants failed this time around. Consequently, some individuals are now exchanging their livestock for grain. Soda said:
Mvura haina kunaya zvakanaka, tine mbesa dzakaparara zvachose zvekuti hatikwanise kudziverenga zvakafanana nemapfunde atinosirarama nawo nechibage nokuda kwekusanaya kwakaita mvura (We received low rainfall last season and the sorghum and maize seeds did not germinate).
Zbc News reports that although the names of vulnerable families were submitted to the District Administrator’s office through councillors, no grain has been received yet.
Zimbabwe as a whole is facing starvation following the Elnino induced drought. Famine is however not uniform as some regions had some other disasters which exacerbated the issue. Cyclone Idai did less to help the situation as it destroyed crops and several structures.
