Woman Raped By Soldiers During Gukarahundi Afflicted By STI 30 Years On

A woman from Matabeleland still suffers from a Sexually Transmitted Disease she was infected with when a group of Gukurahundi soldiers violated her in the 1980s.

The woman revealed her ordeal to the National Peace and Reconciliation Commissioner (NPRC) in Lupane during the ongoing reconciliation process.

NPRC commissioner, Netty Musanhu revealed this while tabling the Commission’s NPRC’s five-year strategic plan to stakeholders in Masvingo last week. Said Musanhu:

Talking of Gukurahundi, we all know what happened.

We were in Lupane recently and there is a victim of this massacre who narrated how she was raped by a group of soldiers.

She told us that she still carries an STI that she contracted when she was raped back then.

The commissioner added that the NPRC provides counselling to the survivors of the massacres. She said:

This is how our past is conflicted and as a Commission, we shall facilitate the provision of psycho-social support to such victims who are still burdened by the past events for the country to heal.

Victims will be at the centre of the Commission’s activities. It is the voice of the victims which will drive the work of the Commission.

Gukurahundi is a term used to refer to disturbances in Matabeleland and Midlands in the 1980s which resulted in the death of an estimated 20,000 Ndebele people.

It was carried out by the North Korean trained 5th Brigade which was an elite regiment of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces. Gukurahundi is derived from a Shona language term which loosely translates to “the early rain which washes away the chaff before the spring rains”.
