Rural Teachers Demand USD Salaries. Give Government 14 Days Notice

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has given government 14 days notice of a strike. The Daily News reports that the two organisations have promised the job action if government fails to open fresh discussions mainly on salaries being paid in US dollars.

ARTUZ organisation’s secretary-general Robson Chere said in a letter addressed to Civil Service Commission on Friday:

The aforementioned union submitted a letter as a reminder of our salaries to be pegged in United States dollars. The letter was submitted to your office on the 15th of April 2019.

Since then you have not responded to our grievances. Under the circumstances of your non-committal conduct, we hereby give you a (14 days) notice of industrial action in terms of the laws of Zimbabwe.

ARTUZ has been active in a fight for the livelihoods of rural teachers in recent years. The organisation reportedly has over 5,000 members.
