NGOs Help Fight Fall Armyworm In Zimbabwe

Non-governmental organisations GOAL and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) have teamed up to help in the fight against Fall Armyworm in Zimbabwe. The two NGOs will help educate farmers on best practices in the fight against the pest.

Said Gift Mashango of GOAL Zimbabwe:

“The fall armyworm has further worsened the food security situation of smallholder farmers who are already coping with an ailing economy and climate change. Besides the adverse effects posed to the environment by chemical methods of combating the pest, the smallholder farmer cannot afford to meet the associated costs, hence the need to come up with innovative cost-effective farming systems like climate smart agriculture.”

According to a study conducted by CIMMYT in eastern Zimbabwe, 12% of the crops produce are destroyed by the fall armyworm annually.
