Macauley Bonne May Not Go To AFCON After Govt Amended Citizenship Law
Leyton Orient and Warriors striker, Macauley Bonne, may not be available to represent Zimbabwe at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament which starts next month.
This follows reports that the Zimbabwe Citizenship Bill, whose amendments were approved recently, will require that he renounces his British citizenship for him to acquire a Zimbabwean passport.
Earlier reports indicated that Bonne submitted his application forms at the Zimbabwean embassy in the UK. With the new changes, his Zimbabwean future has been thrown into doubt.
Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com on Saturday, Warriors manager Wellington Mpandare said:
It’s quite difficult now to have all those players who were not born here in Zimbabwe into Warriors set up.

Recent changes to dual citizenship laws clearly stipulate that a person who was born outside Zimbabwe will have to renounce the other passport to get a Zimbabwean one.
Now it means that we need to start all over again and I don’t see anyone making it before the Africa Cup of Nations or we need help from senior government officials.
Bonne, who was born in Britain to a Zimbabwean father, has been in fine form this season. He has scored 23 goals in 46 matches to help Leyton earn promotion back to the Football League Two.
ZIFA has been trying to lure Britons who have Zimbabwean roots to represent the Warriors. The likes of Bonne, Andy Rinomhota, Reiss Nelson, Adam Chicksen, and Kundai Benyu among others, have been on the radar.
According to NewZimbabwe.com, both Wales-based Alec Mudimu and Leicester City’s Admiral Muskwe were born in Zimbabwe and grew up in the UK. They were part of the squad when the Warriors secured their ticket to Egypt..
