Current Tensions Are Sign-Posting Worse Things To Come - Analysts

Analysts have argued that tensions currently grounding Zimbabwe are mirroring worse things to come. The government is at loggerheads with civil society groups, opposition political parties, and citizens over the unrelenting economic crisis.

Opposition political parties, labour organisations and consumer rights organisations have recently threatened to launch crippling protests if the situation continues unabated.

On the other hand, the ruling party, ZANU PF and the government have issued threats to those who purport to initiate demonstrations. The ZANU PF spokesperson, Simon Khaya Moyo recently revealed that security personnel are on high alert to squash any protest that would degenerate into mayhem and anarchy. This brings into remembrance the January stay-aways which left about 16 people dead, loss of properties and revenue for businesses.

Speaking to the Daily News, University of Zimbabwe political science lecturer Eldred Masunungure said:

The way to solve differences is to sit down and talk. Mnangagwa and Chamisa should find each other … The problem is their egos.

They should swallow their pride for the good of Zimbabweans. Unfortunately when giants fight, it is the grass that suffers … but soon there will be no grass because the suffering is now worse.

Another political analyst, Admire Mare, said the country urgently needed to have a shared vision and concerted efforts from all stakeholders to foster political stability which is fundamental to economic recovery.

Rashweat Mukundu urged the government to lead a national dialogue which must be aimed at addressing challenges faced by the country.
