South Africa Celebrates Freedom Day

South Africa celebrates Freedom Day today, 27 April 2019. Freedom Day marks the day when the first democratic election in which all South Africans were able to participate in was held in 1994.

The late Nelson Mandela was elected South Africa’s first African president in those historic elections. The elections also marked the end of Apartheid in South Africa.
