A Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) official was reportedly poisoned to death together with his cousin.
Charles Mwarira was supposed to be a key state witness in ongoing investigations in an alleged smuggling syndicate operating at the Beitbridge Border Post.
According to a Zim Morning Post report, the smuggling involves ZIMRA officials and Zimbabwe Republic Police officers. The publication’s source said:
Mwarira was poisoned. Before he died he mentioned that he was given some milk which he consumed together with his cousin who also died.
We are not sure who gave him the milk but all we know is that he was a state witness in a smuggling case.
Social media reports, however, indicated intruders broke into the deceased official’s house and laced food inside a refrigerator with poison.
ZIMRA Faith Mazani confirmed that an official died but she denied that he had anything to do with investigations. She said:
The person who died was in the administration and had nothing to do with investigations. I am appealing to the media to respect the grieving family.
