Nyathi further revealed that the accident occurred at the 118km peg when the driver of the Honda Fit encroached into the lane of the oncoming Nissan Caravan while trying to overtake another vehicle resulting in the crash.

All four people aboard the Honda died on the spot while the other victims were in the kombi.

16 people were seriously injured and taken to Marondera Hospital for treatment.

Reports indicate that most of the dead were members of an Apostolic Church group who were returning from an annual Passover gathering at Bazel Bridge in Marange, Manicaland.

The Macheke accident raised the number of the death toll during the Easter holidays to 30.
