World Commemorates International Day Of Genocide in Rwanda

The world and Rwanda today commemorate the International Day of the Reflection of the Genocide in Rwanda. Zimbabwe is commemorating the international day too with Vice President of the country, Constantino Chiwenga, having traveled to Rwanda for the day. Zimbabweans will also hold an inaugural reflection of the genocide at Arrupe Jesuit University in Harare on Friday 12 April.

7 April marks the start of the 1994 genocide which lasted for the 100-day period to mid-July 1994. About 800,000 people are estimated to have perished in the genocide, most of them, people of Tutsi origin.

The United Nations General Assembly designated 7 April as an International Day oto remember the genocide which resulted in  “all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system and other relevant international organizations, as well as civil society organizations, to observe the International Day, including special observances and activities in memory of the victims of the genocide in Rwanda.”
