Govt 'Investigating' Assault On 263Chat Journalists By Police Officers

The government has revealed that it has commenced investigations on the assault of 263Chat journalists by plainclothed police officers in Harare on Thursday afternoon.

The officers allegedly threw teargas canisters into the offices through a window and shut the door, forcing the journalists to escape through windows.

The police officers were engaged in running battles with vendors when the incident took place. Reports indicate that the journalists were covering the disturbances when police officers charged, resulting in some journalists sustaining injuries.

Through its Twitter handle, the Ministry of Information said:

Govt has been made aware of an incident in Harare CBD which involves allegations of mistreatment of members of the Media made against the police. These allegations are now under investigation. Our constitution guarantees freedom of the Media and Govt respects the Constitution.
