Chinhoyi town could soon be accorded city status after the Minister of Local Government, July Moyo this week sent a commission of inquiry to determine its suitability.
This was confirmed by town clerk Maxwell Kaitano, but he refused to divulge further details to the media.
Chinhoyi Residents Trust welcomed the move, as it is expected to attract investors once the town is accorded city status. The Trust’s chairperson, Peter Liwanda said:
I reckon the Chinhoyi Municipality has made strides in improving service delivery in the town. We envisage the awarding of city status will enable the council to augment its work. We applaud the town clerk and his administration for the good work.
Chinhoyi is located about 115km northwest of the capital, Harare. It is the administrative capital of Mashonaland West province.
The only other city in the province is Kadoma, situated along the Harare to Bulawayo highway.
