ZANU PF Holds Supremacy Over Govt - President Mnangagwa

President Emmerson Mnangagwa said that the ruling ZANU PF party holds supremacy over the government because the latter is born out of the former.

Speaking before the Zanu PF’s 111 central committee meeting on Friday in the capital, Mnangagwa who seemed to have been keen on pleasing the old guard that he replaced with ‘technocrats’ in government, said:

The supremacy of the party, as a philosophy, is the ideal position which we must concertedly work to achieve. Cognisant that government is a product of the party, we are all agreed that the party is supreme. The party came first, then the revolution came second.

We have failed to show the supremacy of the party over the government. That we have not achieved yet. We must reach a stage where the party leadership departments are ahead of government because the government is born out of the party.

Some of the long-serving former cabinet ministers who were shown the exit door include Patrick Chinamasa (Finance), Obert Mpofu (Home Affairs), Simon Khaya Moyo (Information) and Samuel Membengegwi (Foreign Affairs).

Party officials who spoke to Newsday claimed that Mnangagwa knows that the bigwigs had a sense of entitlement to ministerial posts during the Mugabe era. Said the sources:

The President is well aware that there are people who felt they were entitled to ministerial posts, particularly after backing him during the ouster of former President Robert Mugabe. However, he was also alive to the fact that their presence in government would not have inspired confidence in his leadership.

They are people who thought they would be rewarded and this has not been happening. This has caused serious divisions in the party. Some of this played out on the attempt to oust the youth leadership and the eventual dissolution of the Harare and Bulawayo provinces.
