'MDC Will Not Tolerate Violence Among Members'

MDC was rocked by violent incidents in Chitungwiza over the past weekend leaving some officials badly injured.

The violent clashes are alleged to have resulted from conflicts over the restructuring exercise currently being done by the party ahead of the elective Congress slated for May this year.

Party spokesperson Jacob Mafume admitted that there were isolated incidents of violence which he said will not derail the preparations for the Congress. Said Mafume:

We are still to get reports, but as you know, our district meetings have been going on from Saturday and Sunday and we will get the feedback.

We deployed provincial and national members to monitor and supervise the process and they will give full reports. We have hundreds of district meetings going on, the bulk of them going on without any incident.

Where there has been any incident and caused internally, the appropriate action will be taken after a thorough investigation. We are, by and large, satisfied with the progress, although there have been few reports here and there.

We will investigate anything that comes out of the Chitungwiza processes, including any injury to person and damage to property to find out who caused it and where it came from and we will take appropriate action.

The party’s organising secretary Amos Chibaya said that the MDC does not tolerate violence;

We don’t have room for violence in our party. Those people causing violence belong to Zanu PF, they have Zanu PF demons and by so doing they have fired themselves from the party. Our template is very clear, we don’t tolerate violence.

The violence has nothing to do with the senior leadership. People want positions because the MDC is a democratic party and it is a freedom train. No one wants to be left aside. The violence has nothing to do with anyone in the leadership.

Chibaya denied reports that the rowdy party members were working on behalf of party president Nelson Chamisa.
