Mugabe In The Limelight At SADC Solidarity Conference

Former President Robert Mugabe is still ‘playing a role’ in regional affairs even though its almost one and a half years since he was ousted in a military coup.

Reports from South Africa claim regional leaders attending a solidarity conference for Western Sahara began the meeting by playing a video clip of Mugabe.

In the video, Mugabe is seen lashing out at The Kingdom of Morocco, which has been occupying Western Sahara for many years.

According to NewZimbabwe.com, sources attending the SADC said:

A video clip of former President Mugabe, lashing out at Morocco’s colonial tendencies in Western Sahara, was played before the start of proceedings. It was a clip of Mugabe’s reacting angrily at Morocco’s admission into the African Union (AU).

Mugabe is still respected even though he is no longer in power. His ideas continue to influence regional politics on the continent and in the region.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesperson, George Charamba, who is in South Africa said:

There is nothing unusual about it. SADR is regarded as the last colony on the continent, Zanu PF is a liberation movement and so is the Polisario Front.

There was indeed a slot for a video and it was played. His (Mugabe’s) ideas are held in high regard and they continue to influence us that’s why we have the land reform program.

SADR stands for Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, the official name for Western Sahara. SADR has been fighting for independence from Morocco for several years now.
