Zimbabwe Republic Police officer in charge for the Matabeleland North Provincial Armoury, Inspector David Fugao, has been arrested on allegations of hiring out firearms to suspected poachers. He was arrested after a wildlife poacher nabbed by police for possessing an unlicensed firearm implicated Fugao for supplying him the gun.
The gun was reportedly used for poaching and Fugao would get a share of the proceeds from the criminal activity.
Fugao was charged with two counts of criminal abuse of office as a public officer and two police officer colleagues charged together with him are also facing a count each of the same charge.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is the country's law enforcing and maintaining organ. It was established in 1980 evolving from the Rhodesian Police and incorporated members from both the Rhodesian and the nationalist forces. It operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
