Battlefields Mine Rescue Efforts End With Final Two Bodies Retrieved

The remaining two bodies of miners who were trapped underground in a mine at Battlefields near Kadoma were brought to the surface on Thursday.

Eight people were rescued alive after being trapped underground for four days when mine shafts at the Cricket 3 Mine were inundated with flood waters on February 12. 28 miners lost their lives.

Speaking during a post-cabinet media briefing in Harare on Thursday, acting Information Minister Sekai Nzenza said:

This brings closure to the rescue efforts pertaining to the Battlefields Mine Disaster. Cabinet once again expresses its deepest condolences to the affected families and the artisanal mining fraternity in general.

The Battlefields Mine Disaster has prompted Cabinet Ministers to pledge law reforms to legalise the activities of the artisanal miners which they hope will lead to greater safety.
