Civil Servants Can Borrow Money From Govt To Purchase Vehicles

Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube has said civil servants will be able to borrow money from Government to purchase vehicles.

This comes after Government gave civil servants the green light to import cars duty-free. The duty-free scheme is covered by Statutory Instrument 52 of 2019 and will see those with 10 years in the service qualifying. A vehicle to be imported should not exceed USD10 000 while a person is entitled to import one car within a period of five years. Speaking to journalists after Thursday’s cabinet meeting, Ncube clarified issues around the vehicle loan scheme for senior civil servants. He stated that civil servants will not get free funds, but will borrow money from Government to purchase vehicles and they will repay it back in full.
