Mafume Released After Hours Of Interrogation By Police

MDC national spokesperson Cllr Jacob Mafume has been released by the police after spending hours being interrogated.

Mafume was freed without charge after police indicated they would call his lawyer Advocate Bhatasara if they intend to press any charges against him.

There were concerns that he would be charged with treason, as it has become the government’s template when dealing with opposition officials.

Earlier today, MDC deputy national spokesperson Dr Bekithemba Mpofu had announced that Mafume was confined at ZRP Law and Order section in the company of his attorney Advocate Bhatasara of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.

Several MDC councillors and MPs have been arrested since the January riots and some have been charged with treason.

Only a week ago, MDC deputy treasurer Chalton Hwende was arrested soon after arrival from Namibia and charged with treason.

Hwende’s arrested followed on the heels of another MDC MP, Joanna Mamombe’s arrest. She has since been charged with treason.
