Sanctions Aren't The Problem, But Disrespect Of property Rights - Mahere

Constitutional law expert Fadzai Mahere has voiced her opinion on the ongoing controversy around the United States of America’s decision to extend by another year the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.

Mahere has asked why countries that are considered ‘all-weather friends’ and haven’t imposed sanctions on the country are not investing in Zimbabwe.

She opines that the real problem with Zimbabwe is the country’s failure to respect property rights and its propensity to ignore the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreements (BIPPAs). Said Mahere:

Ask yourself – why isn’t Zim awash with investors from countries that haven’t imposed sanctions against us including UK, Canada, Hong Kong, China and Russia? It’s because the Govt disrespects property rights, ignores BIPPAs and of course, money dissolves in banks here. Not sanctions.

This week the United States President, Donald Trump announced an extension of the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe 18 years ago.
