No Opposition Leader Charged With Treason Has Ever Been Convicted: Coltart

Former MDC legislator and Minister for Primary and Secondary Education David Coltart said that ZANU PF has charged countless opposition politicians with treason yet not a single one of them has been convicted.

Coltart added that it’s ironic that the only clear cut case of treason since independence is what President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga and Foreign Affairs Minister S.B. Moyo did in November 2017. Said Coltart:

In my 36 years of practice of law in Zimbabwe, Zanu-PF has charged countless opposition politicians with treason but our courts have never convicted any of them. Ironically the only clear cut case of treason since independence is what Mnangagwa, Chiwenga & S.B. Moyo did in 11/17.

Since January this year, several people have been charged with treason. They include a Harare pastor, Evan Mawarire, and leader of Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition, Rashid Mahiya.

This week, two MDC MPs, namely Joanna Mamombe and Chalton Hwende were charged with treason within 36 hours of each other.
