56 Bulawayo Pupils Rushed To Hospital After Consuming Jatropha Seeds

56 grade four pupils ate poisonous seeds from a Jatropha tree at the school in Nkulumane suburb, Bulawayo and were rushed to the hospital.

The incident occurred on Friday at Sigombe primary school and the affected pupils were rushed to Mpilo General Hospital.

The pupils, 34 boys and 22 girls were doing general work at the school’s premises when they ate the seeds.

The pupils experienced severe abdominal pains and diarrhoea which prompted the authorities to rush them to hospital.

Mpilo Hospital Public Relations Officer, Ozias Ndlovu confirmed the incident. He said:

We gave the children Oral rehydration salt (ORS) to replace the fluids they lost. They will be placed under observation for the night.
