Kariba Power Generation Down To 50%

Zimbabwe and Zambia have cut the power generation to around half capacity at the Kariba Hydro-electric power plants as a result of dwindling water levels in the dam.

The development was revealed by Zambia Electricity Corporation (ZESCO) spokesperson Henry Kapata.

Kapata said that both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides had been restricted to 500 MW each from total capacities of around 1 000 MW. He said:

The Zambezi River Authority gave us an annual allocation of 19-billion cubic metres of water and this means we can only generate up to 500 MW each.

Kariba Dam’s water levels have fallen to 43 per cent of its capacity.
