ZCTU Consoles Families Of Battlefields Mine Disaster

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) expressed sorrow over the Battlefields Mine Disaster which has so far claimed 24 lives.

ZCTU posted a statement on its Twitter page which reads as follows:

We are deeply saddened by the death confirmations of artisanal miners whose bodies have so far been retrieved. We remain hopeful that more will still be rescued. These are workers who had been contributing to the nation. They deserved better and quicker assistance from the Government.

The accident occurred at two gold mines near Kadoma, Cricket Mine (owned by RioZim Limited) and another smaller mine privately operated. Casualties are expected to rise as there are more people believed to have been trapped under floodwaters for over 5 days.
