SADC Chair, UN Secretary-general Meet Over Zim, DRC Situations

SADC chairperson and Namibian President Hage Geingob on Sunday engaged the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres over the deteriorating situation in Zimbabwe.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the ongoing African Union meeting in Ethiopia. This was revealed through a statement released by the Namibian president’s office. The statement reads:

I just concluded this morning talks with the SG of the UN. We discussed the political situation in the DRC, Zimbabwe and wider SADC region.

We agreed on the complementary nature of SADC and the UN efforts to improve governance and the quality of life of SADC citizens.

Zimbabwe’s security forces have been accused of human rights violations during a violent crackdown on protesters during the January demonstrations over a sharp fuel hike announced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. 17 people were reportedly killed.
