A report claims that soldiers and police details on Tuesday evening ran amok in the Bulawayo suburb of Mabuthweni, moving from house to house and beating up all males they found.
A report by Habakkuk Trust Director Dumisani Nyongolo Nkomo together with the Director of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) who went to Mabuthweni to ascertain the damage reads:
Just been to Mabutweni with Jenny Williams and Magodonga Mahlangu to assess the situation. Scores of people were beaten yesterday evening by the army and police.
They were going door to door and forcing all males to come out and then making them lie down and then beat them with baton sticks and fan belts.
We spoke to a least six males who were badly beaten ranging from the ages of 16 to 59 and they told us about the manner in which the army and police randomly went door to door beating any male on site.A Njiva driving a Quantum was also stopped and thoroughly beaten together with three other colleagues.
We were told chilling stories about how the police and army went door to door harassing and wantonly beating civilians.
This must stop now. Let the church arise and speak, let civil society arise and speak out, let the young people arise and speak. This must end now.
