Government Ordered Us To Shut Down The Internet, Says Econet Wireless

The country’s largest internet providers by number of customers, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, has said that government ordered them to shut down the internet.  This is despite claims by Zimbabwe’s Deputy Information Minister, Energy Mutodi, yesterday that government had not shut down the internet.

Said the Econet SMS:

Further to a warrant issued by the Minister of State in the President¿s Office for National Security through the Director General  of the President¿s Dept, acting in terms of the Interception of Communications Act,Internet Services are currently suspended across all networks and Internet Services Providers. We are obliged to act when directed to do so and the matter is beyond our control. All inconveniences are sincerely regretted

All mobile networks and internet service providers in the country shut down the internet yesterday plunging the country into a connectivity darkness that lasted some 30 hours. The Deputy minister claimed in a news interview that the lack of access was just because of congestion.
