The Mediterranean Shipping Company has threatened to halt deliveries of cargo containers bound for Zimbabwe over non-payment of freight charges.
In a letter addressed to the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) president Sifelani Jabangwe dated January 8, 2019, MSC threated to go as far as discouraging the acceptance of cargo destined for Zimbabwe aboard ist ships worldwide.
The letter further revealed that they are owed funds amounting $9,103,111.00 (nine million, one hundred and three thousand, one hundred and eleven dollars.
The company bemoaned what it calls the Central Bank’s failure to acknowledge its key role in trade. It condemned the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) for failing to live up to its commitments.
MSC says it, therefore, has no alternative other than discouraging charge designed to Zimbabwe to load on its ships. Alternatively, it will only be able to accept cargo destined for Zimbabwe after full payment is made in advance.
