MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa has reportedly demanded that Chitungwiza councillors explain themselves over allegations of vote-buying during the election of the town’s mayor.
The Mail and Telegraph report that the mayor, Gift Tsverere, allegedly bribed Jabulani Mtunzi with a Toyota Camry vehicle which the latter made a ‘swap and top deal’ with a Chitungwiza man without Tsverere’s consent. The publication’s sources said:
The President (Chamisa)has summoned 20 councillors from Chitungwiza he is not happy with what happened during the mayoral elections where his name was dragged into the mud.
… President Chamisa called Tsverere ordering him to withdraw the case and he has summoned all Chitungwiza councillors to Harvest House.
MDC Alliance spokesperson Jacob Mafume confirmed that the Chitungwiza councillors were indeed at Harvest House, the party’s headquarters but professed ignorance of the allegations levelled against them.
